Jelenetfotó 2.2In the beginning, there was the chaos: a matter without shape where wet and dry, warm and cold were mixed together. From chaos detached the earth, the water, the air and the fire. These are the primary elements that appear in all cosmogonies. In Romanian stories, these elements are characters with a life of their own, connected through complex relations and have a part in the Creation scenario. There is some kind of channel that nature uses in order to infiltrate into culture. It transfigures itself in the objects that surround us, that form our world: a world of artifacts. All traditional cultures agree that we are made of these elements; to a certain extent we are the supreme artifact of a demiurge. In Christianism, the religion most Romanians have, God made the man from earth and the breath that brought him to life. Thus the man is made of body and soul. But what are we made of today ? In traditional societies, the human body was a cosmic body, but in modern times the man becomes its own artifact. This is how the object-artifact and the man-artifact are the result of the imagination of the same Universal Creator. Primary elements melt into the primary intuitions and give birth to the “dreams of the matter” which haunt us when we sleep and when we are awake. The producers intended to reveal – without de-mythologize, to know – without theorize what we may call “the cultural memory of humanity”. Earth, air, water and fire: the primordial elements, gifted with spirit, give birth to Spirituality which endows the matter with a soul in an infinite spiral.
