Jelenetfotó 6.6The film is a portrait of Theodor Bergmann, a ninety-year old jewish communist, who had experiences that cover almost all the historical turning points of the twentieth century. Born in Berlin during the Republic of Weimar, Bergmann became a member of the antistalinist communist movement in Germany. In 1933 he had to flee to Palestine, where he worked for the creation of a jewish state. But the wish to fight the Nazis was stronger: In 1936 he left Palestine heading to Czech Republic to join the antifascist struggle. In 1938 he went into exile in Sweden, where he waited for the end of national socialism, working on a farm meanwhile. Returning to Germany in 1946, he was disliked by many Germans because of his Jewish background he was also disliked by the Eastern German bureaucracy as a critical, oppositional communist, because he had dared to critisize Stalin in the years before. Inspite of his career as a university professor, he remained a critical communist. He writes books, organizes socialist conferences, supports trade union struggles and travels around the world even today. Theodor Bergmann, despite all the suffering he had to take, is lead by a "historical optimism", as he says. This optimism takes it's energy from knowledge: the knowledge that "another world is possible".
