Jelenetfotó 2.2Lawra Somby is a young yoiker from South Saami regions, son of well-known yoikers as well, and captured between the urban life of Oslo and the sense of belonging to his mother’s areas. He grew up as a bilingual child but he had to give up the South Saami language because the Norwgegian kindergarden couldn’t cope with multiculturalism at that time. The search for his mother tongue is his main theme in the film. A yoik telling his story was created along the production of the documentary: “Imana Guarka”: “I don’t understand”. Sarah Marielle Gaup is a young Saami pop-star from Kautageino, one of the main settlements in Sápmi, in the Norwegian Finnmark. She is a daughter of well-known joykers too, and she lives in a more traditional siida (clan) and reindeer herders style of life. These two singers have recently started the group Adjágas, which in Lappish means: ‘between wake and sleep’, that state that Saami herders know well, for the yoik can reach the singer, can be revealed, can appear to him-her. In Saami language in fact one says “to see a yoik”, not to “compose a yoik”. By filming their informal rehearsals we discover how new yoiks are coming to light, not only as traditional musical-poetic forms that they learned since childhood. We also discover what kind of cultural themes emerge in their lyrics and what kind of dialogue or conflict is enacted among different generations of contemporary Saami. Their work is becoming a manifesto for many young Saami in Norway. An easy success doesn’t mean that they fail to express their respective Saami and non-Saami identities (Norwegian, Cosmopolitan, European etc.).
