Jelenetfotó 4.4Kalari: a sacred pit. Payattu: exercise. Kalarippayattu is a martial art indigenous to the southern Indian state of Kerala. Originating as a form of combat in medieval south India, its followers claim that it is ‘the mother of all martial arts’. Yet few people outside of Kerala have seen or even heard of this practice. Inside the Kalari is a lyrical and atmospheric portrayal of kalarippayattu filmed in a traditional kalari located in Thiruvananthaparum. It focuses on the aestheticised movements of the practitioner’s bodies as they progress through the various levels of training and practice, to capture the essence of kalarippayattu through the day-to-day-ness of its existence. Inside the Kalari prompts the viewer to question the meaning of this ritualistic and spiritual physical practice in modern Kerala, in global India. Some of the practitioners tell us what kalarippayattu means to them. Yet, as we are drawn into the sacred space of the kalari, reflecting on the rhythmic sensuality and dynamic grace of kalarippayattu, we leave the kalari with more questions than answers. Inside the Kalari is far removed from available educational films on this martial art and the sensational ones that focus on an exoticisation of the practice and the people. It is in a sense from the soil: it does not shy away from the inevitable voyeuristic element brought on by the other, but incorporates a sense of ‘lived experience’ that counters the almost self-reflexive gaze. When the body becomes all eyes, as Kalari Gurukkals often remark, you see without gazing. Inside the Kalari succeeds in evoking that poetic ambiance, especially with the apt application of Keralite music to Kalari movements, that draws the viewer to become involved but also detaches the viewer to question and invites the viewer to understand. Inside the Kalari is dedicated to Gurukkal C.V.Govindankutty Nair (1930 - 2006), one of the last of the legendary masters of Kalarippayattu.
