Jelenetfotó1LEAVING TRANSYLVANIA explores the characteristics of a parochial community in central Romania and documents the melting of a small culture into a global pot. It points to the disorientation of individuals experiencing their environment and history in decline.After the collapse of Communism in Romania, thousands of Transylvanian Saxons the so-called ethnic Germans from ‘Siebenbuergen’ emigrated from central Romania to Germany. The massive emigration wiped villages empty and endangered the 800 years old cultural heritage. This dramatic situation is seen trough the eyes of an elderly couple from a village called Arbejen. We learn that a continuation of the Transylvanian Saxon identity seems impossible.Hans and Maria Kenzel, aged 70, are part of a handful of people, who remained behind in the village, after the EXODUS in 1990. They sweep the heavy dust in the local church fortress, ring the bells and wind up the village clocks… After a decade of loneliness and disorientation, they acknowledge the two painful alternatives: to abandon their home or remain in the village all-alone. In yearning for security and a familiar community they turn to their relatives in Augsburg in Germany. The documentary depicts the last harvest, the family's preparations to leave their home behind, and creates a touching story worth remembering…
