It’s 1963 in the outback and the Australian police are hot on the trail of master tracker Billy Benn as he attempts to escape being brought to justice for the murder of his wife’s lover. Will he escape into the vast Australian landscape forever or will the police, led by his fellow tracker Teddy Egan, finally catch up with him? Fast forward and twenty years later another manhunt is underway but, this time not for a fugitive from the law but a 6-year-old girl lost in the forest, for nine days. We follow George Musgrave as he uses his razor-sharp senses to detect the faintest of signs that might lead to little Sarah so that he can bring her back home to her parents before time runs out. These razor-sharp senses, the means of the tracker, will also help break up a small-town drug ring trafficking in marijuana rescue a stranded American photographer from dehydration in the desert, and locate a young cow- boy named Peter who disappears during a stampede while bringing his cattle back to station. These trackers’ remarkable abilities had been around for centuries when the police realized that it would be interesting to put them to use in tracking escaped and missing persons in what was then a British penal colony. But in this age of GPS, 4x4 vehicles and helicopters, are we letting go of something more fundamental – an intuitive knowledge linking man to nature?
