According to an industrial program, a huge petrochemical and steel- manufacturing complex was set up in the west of the port of Dunkerque fifty years ago. A seven-kilometre-long artificial seawall, the seawall of Braek, was built for the tankers delivering various ores and oil to get the closest possible to the factories. It was built along a very beautiful beach where a great many people still go to sunbathe in the summer time, in spite of the danger it represents for them (it is close to seven "Seveso" factories). The seawall is a kind of border between what is natural: the beach, the sea and its tides and what is the work of men: the enormous industrial monster that the factories and the refineries, supplied by cargo liners, waiting in line along the quays, represent. I want to stay on this seawall for a while and watch this world we created and continue to sustain. I want it to become a place of introspection, where we can ask ourselves what we are doing to our world and what changes our consuming society has brought into our lives. I want to constantly switch from those who idle on the beach and those who work on the opposite bank. These people who watch and feed this enormous machinery, which provides us with our consumers’ daily needs. In between these two worlds we can get a glimpse of another world, a far away one brought by the sailors aboard the numerous cargo boats coming from all over the world. All these very different people will contribute to this film and be the living souls of this setting. They will bring this story into life and give it its own soul.
