In the context of a forest village in Central India, this documentary raises questions about the delivery of state services and how far an anthropologist ‘participant observer’ should try to help the people they study. The story is told from the perspective of an anthropologist who did doctoral and post doctoral research in the village and eventually approached the district administration about a local problem. She was fortunate to find a new officer already considering action and the sequel shows how a willing and effective civil servant can deliver real improvements. But why had neglect and corruption been so widely tolerated? And why did it take special circumstances for people to get services they were entitled to?
