Jelenetfotó 1.4Press freedom is in a bad state, the world over it is being ignored, suppressed, trampled underfoot. Journalists are being censored, imprisoned, tortured, and killed, because they are brave enough to raise their voices and denounce the situation in their countries. In Russia, Pakistan, the Middle East and Turkey they died for their right to freedom of speech; few managed to escape. The “Maison des Journalistes” in Paris acts as a kind of safety net for refugees working in the media. A place where journalists can get a foot-hold again and put down their suitcases for six months after the persecution they suffered, the odyssey of exile and the precarious lodgings in a strange city. They all have their own story to tell and their individual point of view. Iraq, Cuba, Ukraine, Burundi, Cameroon, the Congo …repression looks different in different countries. The journalists’ memories of of imprisonment and torture, throw their shadows onto the white walls of the “Maison des Journalistes”. They are cursed thoughts which follow them all the way into freedom … The journalists pay a heavy price for their commitment to defend freedom of expression. At a moment’s notice they have to leave their families, their friends, their country. They end up as asylum seekers in a strange city and often have to bury their pens and their microphones. Here, in the “Maison des Journalistes”, they are given the opportunity for further training and with it the hope of finding work in the future, in freedom. Journalists from a number of countries guide us through this film and take us on a journey from within the four walls of the “Maison des Journalistes” It is a journey that covers the lives of people from all over the world who fight for freedom of expression and plead for press freedom.
